Tax Sales Around The Country and the Impact of COVID

tax sales around the country

Which tax sales around the country have been postponed or canceled their tax sales due to COVID? And which states are carrying out their tax sale auctions as usual…

Tax Lien Sales Around the Country

For tax lien sales, it’s a mixed bag. Some states continue to postpone their live tax sales, until later in the year. A couple of tax lien states that only have live auctions – Iowa and Washington DC have canceled their tax sales for 2020. Other states that only have live tax sales have postponed them. Some states that have online tax sales pushed them off a little but still had the live auctions this summer. And some will still be coming up this fall.

States like Colorado where half the counties have live tax sales and the rest have online sales will be conducting their online tax sales this fall. Most of the live tax sales in Colorado will still take place this year but may happen later in the fall. The state of Maryland also has both online and live tax sales. Some of which were held later than normal, and some canceled entirely for this year. New Jersey also has municipalities with both online and live tax sales. Most of the spring and summer tax sales were postponed until later in the year. And now even some of the early fall tax sales are being rescheduled for November and December. December has always been one of the busiest months for New Jersey tax sales (along with June). But this year it looks like November will be a big month for tax sales in New Jersey as well.

There are a few counties in Indiana and Illinois that have rescheduled their tax sales until late fall or even early next year.

Tax Deed Sales

States with online tax deed sales are continuing to hold their online auctions. States that have live tax sales have postponed or canceled their auctions for this year. Some of the states that have postponed their auctions have been starting to hold them now. Even counties that hold online auctions have postponed them until later in the year because their government offices were closed until recently.

Arkansas and New Mexico have canceled all tax sales for 2020. Other tax deed states have some counties that have postponed tax sales until later in the year, some counties that canceled the sale entirely for this year, and some counties that decided to have an online tax sale for the first time. This happened in Pennsylvania, where Montgomery County decided to have its first-ever online tax sale. So far this is the only online tax deed sale in PA.

The State of Florida has had some deed sales canceled for this year and some go online. Counties in this state have frequent deed sales and some of them were already online. Even the online deed sales were canceled during the spring and part of the summer because county offices were closed, but now they have resumed for most of the FL counties that are online.

Many of the online spring and summer tax sales for the states of Washington and California were postponed. But now the fall sales are going ahead on Bid4assets.com. And the Louisiana online deed sales are also happening on CivicSource.com. And the state of New York has resumed some of its online tax deed sales at NYSauctions.com. The Michigan online deed sales just ended, but their second-round online sales start this month and end on November 3 on Tax-Sale.info.

Redeemable Deed Sales

Most of the redeemable deed states do not have online tax sale. And even the states that do have online auctions – Texas and Tennessee, have just a couple of counties with tax sales online. Almost all these counties have live sales.

Many Georgia and Texas counties have tax sales each month. During COVID most of these counties have scheduled and then canceled their auctions each month. The state of Delaware only has 3 counties and 2 of them have tax sales scheduled for this month. One is scheduled for today!

South Carolina tax sales usually happen in the fall. Some have been pushed back a few weeks because of COVID and some will go on as planned. The state of Tennessee had only a couple of counties with online tax sales. These tax sales went ahead as scheduled. And 3 more TN counties decided to have their tax sales online this year. Some of the other counties did postpone their tax sales this year. Connecticut has tax sales scheduled throughout the fall. Tax sales in Philadelphia, PA for October have been rescheduled for November. It remains to be seen if the rescheduled tax sales actually take place or if they get pushed back again.
