I just got back from Savannah Georgia yesterday where I competed in the 2012 National Masters Weightlifting Championships. It was my first time back to national competition in 2 years. And although I wasn’t able to break the Masters National records that I set 2 years ago, I did improve on my lifts and my total for this year and I did win my weight class. This picture below is one of me receiving my medal.
For those of you who are not familiar with Olympic style weightlifting, it consists of 2 competitive lifts the snatch and the clean & jerk. In the snatch the barbell is lifted from the floor overhead. For the clean & jerk, the bar is lifted overhead in 2 stages – It is first lifted to the chest and then overhead. Both lifts are very technical. Each lifter get three attempt at both lifts. I made 2 attempt in the snatch and all 3 in the clean & jerk. I snatched 52 kg. and clean & jerked 63 kg. Way off my best from 8 years ago, but this was only my second competition in almost 2 years.
One thing that I have learned from one of my business mentors is not to compete with others, instead always compete with yourself and that is exactly what I was doing at this competition. I didn’t go to Savannah to win my weight class, although that was a nice perk. I entered this competition so that I could emprove on my lifts and get a better total. I plan on entering more local contests throughout the year to continue to improve on my total so that in November at the Master American Championships I can break some national records.
This might not have much to do with tax lien investing but I hope that it is inspiring, especially for other baby boomers. I hope that inspires you to get moving and get in shape. It’s never too late. I started olympic style weightlifting when I was 35 years old and pregnant with my youngest child. I did my best in my forties, competing in the open division against women who were half my age and winning local competitions. And competing in Master competitions and winning national and world championships. Now 18 years later I’m still competing, even after battling a couple of chronic minor injuries.
